The Sound of the Mediterranean

In the historical heart of Naples, with an unparalleled view of the sea and the Maschio Angioino, SSS created the multi-functional hall for the NUT Academy, a center of excellence in education. The challenge was to create an acoustically impeccable environment, optimal and certified for Dolby Atmos Music & Home Entertainment, while maintaining the three large windows that offer natural light and a breathtaking panorama.

The Inspiration: Technique and Poetry

The client's request went beyond pure technique: the space had to be welcoming, warm, and stimulating to facilitate the learning of professionals and students. We responded by integrating the acoustics with an interior design that draws inspiration from the location itself. The shapes, neutral colors, and wood finishes evoke the image of a ship, a deliberate reference not only due to the proximity to the sea but also to pay homage to the city's history and the naval artifacts found during the subway excavations.

 Acoustic Goal: Technical Details and Functionality 

Given the intended use of the hall, the goal was to develop a suitable internal acoustic treatment while keeping the three window openings. The ceiling treatment features curved cuts designed to house and integrate the Dolby Atmos speakers (Genelec monitors), recalling the floor plan of a vessel. This solution ensures maximum acoustic performance while simultaneously helping to define the interior design.

 For its didactic function, the hall was designed to accommodate multiple students (without the traditional sofa seating at the back) and is equipped with two large side monitors and a retractable screen (with a projector integrated into the ceiling cuts) to ensure visibility and comprehension for all participants.

 This project is a perfect example of our Made in Italy and Tailored Made approach, where technical excellence merges with integrated architectural design that is strongly linked to its context.
