Officina Sonora del Bigallo is a recording studio immersed in the Tuscan hillside and just a few minutes away from the center of Florence. It takes its name from the nearby mid-evil Antico Spedale del Bigallo, situated in the municipality of Bagno a Ripoli. The building was converted from an old barn, and has a view over the city of Florence. The goal is to create a space capable of promoting creative ideas in the realm of sound recording and audio postproduction. The studio is divided into 4 main areas: a large live room, an isolation booth, a control room and a vast lounge area inside and outside of the building. The acoustic treatment is based on a project by Donato Masci and Fabrizio Giovannozzi Studio Sound Service and realised by Proaudio Consulting.

Live Room
Area 50 m2 Volume 350 m3
Reverberation time 0.45/0.55s @500Hz; 0.85s @63Hz
Description
The main room in the building is the live room. With a surface of 500 square feet and 17 foot ceilings, a Steinway & Sons Model B piano takes the spotlight . Polycylindrical and straight wooden diffusors were used here, as well as curtains and bass traps. This acoustic treatment coupled with the structural wood produces a natural reverberation without flutter echoes. Variable acoustics panels are built into the walls and allow the RT30 to be modified from .5 to .6 seconds @ 500Hz. A glass window separates the live room from the lounge and bathroom area.
Control Room
Area 24 m2 Volume 70 m3
Reverberation time 0.19s @ 500Hz; 0.35s @ 63Hz
Description
The control room is the heart and brain of the studio. Its 80 square feet were designed and constructed based on the LEDE concept, Live End Dead End. The front of the room is absorbent while the back is diffusive thanks to the hardwood skyline panel. The acoustic treatment coupled with the DSP Digital Signal Processing creates accurate imaging and detail even outside of the sweet spot. The frequency response is linear, providing great clarity and definition. The room is equipped for 5.1 mixing.
